I suddenly spoke, picking up the bottle of red wine and pouring myself a glass.
Julian stared at me, stunned.
In five years of marriage, I had never once had a drink in front of him.
"Isabella, this toast is for you."
The wine burned as it went down, and I couldn't stop coughing.
Julian frowned at the sight and reached out to pat my back.
I instinctively flinched away, hiding my reddened eyes from his view.
His hand froze in mid-air, and his expression darkened instantly.
"Ella, you're being completely unreasonable."
With that, he took Isabella and left.
The remaining men exchanged uneasy glances before getting up and leaving one by one.
I sat alone in the courtyard and ate the entire meal by myself.
Four hours until my train.
I went into the garden and picked all the herbs and vegetables I had planted, giving them to my neighbors on either side.
Three hours until my train.
After cleaning the kitchen, I placed the family-approved divorce agreement and the bottle of perfume, used only once, on the living room table.
Two hours until my train.
I picked up my suitcase and got into one of the family's cars.
The young driver asked me:
"Ma'am, are you going back to your hometown again? How long will you be gone this time?"
I handed him a few pieces of candy and smiled.
"I don't know. Maybe... forever."
The young driver thought I was joking. He chuckled and took the candy.
"Well, when you're coming back, just have the boss let me know. I'll come pick you up."
I nodded, saying silently to myself:
"There won't be a next time."
At eight that night, Julian returned home with Isabella, followed by the same men from the dinner.
They were laughing and talking, carrying takeout containers from a fancy restaurant.
"Ma'am, we're back!"
The first one through the door called out. Seeing the house was dark, he fumbled for the light switch.
"Is Ma'am out?"
One of the men scratched his head and placed the food on the table.
His eyes fell on the documents, and he froze, calling out instinctively.
"Boss, Ma'am left you a letter... it's... it's a divorce... agreement..."
