Love as Vast as Stars and Sea

Chapter 6

Those deformed feet had won her glory on the runway. They were never a tool to please a man.

And she was not a woman who existed to satisfy a man's fetish.

Damian, you are so much worse than I ever imagined.

After watching Lila's livestream that afternoon, she had assumed Damian would make an excuse and not come home.

To her surprise, he was back before nine o'clock.

Perhaps it was a man's intuition, a gut feeling that made him reject Lila's request to stay the night. He had been neglecting Seraphina lately.

He smiled, looking shy and innocent, holding a bouquet of her favorite sunflowers as he easily pulled the tall woman into his arms.

For a split second, as their eyes met, Seraphina felt like she had been transported back in time, to the nineteen-year-old boy who had cherished her like a precious treasure.

During the years Damian pursued her, she had rejected the roses he sent time and time again. Then one day, he brought her sunflowers. She had been stunned.

The truth was, she disliked expensive, delicate roses. She preferred the vibrant flowers that grew towards the sun, full of wildness and life.

He had said, "I noticed. There are always so many flowers backstage, but your eyes linger on the sunflowers for just a few extra seconds."

"When I look around, you're the only one I see."

"The meaning of sunflowers is the same as what's in my heart..."

Her heart was touched by this man who paid attention to such a small detail. For the first time, she accepted his flowers.

She remembered how he breathed a sigh of relief and muttered to himself, "I knew you didn't reject my flowers because you disliked me. I just wasn't sending the right ones."

His rambling self-talk had made her laugh.

But the innocent boy from her memories was long gone.

The moment she leaned against his chest, she smelled a familiar citrus scent—fresh with a hint of tartness. It was her signature perfume, Un Jardin sur le Nil.

Her pupils constricted for a second. A mocking smile played on her lips. If it weren't for Lila, she might never have discovered her husband's betrayal.

She was pregnant and hadn't worn any perfume. The scent could only have come from another woman.

He was so good at hiding it. After spending half the day with Lila, he came home without a trace of another woman's scent, which meant he had Lila use the same perfume as her.

Fine. Since he was trying so hard to cover his tracks, she might as well play along in this final act of a loving couple.

Seraphina spoke calmly. "I'm pregnant."

A light flashed in Damian's eyes. He exclaimed excitedly, "Really? Honey!"

A wide grin spread across his face, and he suddenly jumped up, losing his usual refined demeanor. He was like an excited teenager, completely immersed in the joy of becoming a father for the first time.

His excitement and joy seemed genuine. He would probably be a loving father.

But this was also the same man who had been trying to conceive a child with another woman these past few days.

He would likely have other children soon enough.

She lowered her eyelids slightly to hide the sorrow in her heart.

Knowing Damian's personality, she took out two documents she had prepared earlier: a divorce agreement and a voluntary waiver of parental rights.

Seraphina flipped directly to the signature page and looked at him with loving eyes.

"Honey, I've got my eye on two new brands. They seem to have a lot of potential. Could you help me acquire them?"

In this moment of joy, he didn't suspect a thing. He decisively signed his name on both documents.

"Of course, baby. That's nothing."

"Even if you wanted the stars from the sky, I would buy them for you."

"For your birthday, I was planning on buying you a private island..."

As he was speaking, his phone rang. He saw the caller ID, and his brow furrowed as he rejected the call.

But the caller was persistent, dialing again and again.

Seeing that her goal was achieved, she no longer needed to put on a show for Damian, feigning the joy of impending parenthood.

She was even a little grateful for Lila's call; otherwise, she wouldn't have known how to continue the act. Seraphina gently tugged on his sleeve and said softly, "You should get that. What if it's something important?"

He reluctantly walked to a corner of the living room to answer, his voice cold. "What is it?"

Loud music and a woman's drunken sobs came from the other end.

"Honey, someone drugged me at the bar."

"I'm so hot all over. Please come save me. There are guys trying to grab me."

"I feel so dizzy... I'm scared."

Whatever was said next, a look of panic crossed Damian's face, and beads of sweat formed on his forehead.

"Honey, I have an emergency. I have to go out."

With that, he turned and rushed out the door without a second glance. She stood at the entrance, watching him get into his car until it disappeared into the night.

A new message popped up on Seraphina's phone.

So what if he went home to you, old news? All it took was a little trick and a few tears, and he came running to me. What's the point of you clinging to the empty title of Mrs. Blackwood?
